The most key essential tool you will ever have as a fashion photographer is your ability to light. There is no other way to master exceptional fashion photography if you don’t know how to use and manipulate and SEE light! I’m sorry, but no “fixing it in photoshop” or action/plug-in can take the place of the most important element in your photography: the lighting. Understanding modifiers, from softboxes to umbrellas or octabanks, using continous light mixed with strobe and manipulating contrast and highlights will help take your work to such a higher level of mastery. I know that lighting can seem intimidating in the beginning. You don’t know what each modifier really does, you’re not sure of how much power to use or how to direct the light exactly and it’s showing in your work. What takes a mediocre shot transformed into a compelling photograph is the lighting.
I think my biggest asset as a photographer is my deep understanding of lighting. Since 1980, when I first picked up a camera, I began the journey of mastering light. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, I worked hard to understand and use lighting intuitively and brilliantly. For the past 17 years, I have continued to master light in the digital age. I have learned many extraordinary things in these past 30 years and now I want to share them with you by offering a one-day intensive lighting workshop.
Two weeks ago, I held this class for the first time and it was such a success that I want to do these now regularly. The class is limited to 6 photographers so I can devote time to each and every one of you. We meet in the morning and we go over your goals, where you are on your journey, what you’d like to most learn and what fears you have of lighting. We then start learning master lighting! I will show you how I lit my Harper’s Bazaar beauty story as well as other editorials. I’ll show you the final image and then I’ll show you the exact lighting set up I used, how I placed the light, how far away I placed the light from the model and so much more! These are my tried and true secrets that I have learned and honed over much time!
Come join me in New York City for a day in the studio with an array of lighting and modifiers so I can show you what each one does, how it works, why it works and most importantly, how to make it work for you! I will show you first what the modifier and lighting set up does and explain why it works in a certain way and then you’ll get a chance to capture that lighting so you can learn to work with it as well! I will have my personal makeup artist, hair stylist and wardrobe stylist on hand to have our model look amazing! It will be a full day of learning, no rest for the wicked they say, so be prepared to take a ton of notes, a bunch of iPhone photos of lighting setups and of course, a desire to learn how to use light the right way because I guarantee, you will leave with an amplified knowledge of lighting and a skill set you can take home with you to use for the rest of your life.
Testimonial from the last Master Lighting Class in November:
“Melissa! You are the best!!! I’m so happy that I took your workshop. I think the size was perfect, the different lighting set-ups you demonstrated are easily achievable, and I appreciated the professionals you engaged for the shoot including model, stylist, make-up artist and hair stylist. I loved the studio. And most of all, I loved you! I had a great time and can’t wait to get home to test out my new lighting techniques. ” — Richard Shiu
