In the past, Capture One has relied on the SDK (Software Developer Kit) supplied by vendors like Canon and Nikon, to enable tethering in Capture One. Whilst this potentially provided an easy, out-of-the-box driver solution, the penalty was that we were restricted with the feature set and reacting to issues was difficult. Compatibility with newer Operating systems, or indeed tethered support for new models, could not be done before an SDK was updated.
Therefore, Phase One decided to create their own PTP Tethering Engine designed to increase performance, reliability and add additional features.
This work started in Capture One 8, replacing Nikon’s SDK and adding Sony tethered support. Now work is completed on the Canon PTP driver. Results are impressive (for some Canon models), capture speed from shot to ready on screen is up by as much as 30%!
This new driver also freed up restrictions and allowed us to redesign a critical part of the tethered workflow, the Next Capture Adjustments tool.
This has now been split into five different parameters giving you more control over the behaviour from shot to shot.
One of the new additions is Live view rotation and forced Orientation which will force a new orientation away from the cameras default. This is particularly useful if you are capturing over head and the camera’s rotational sensor is confused shot to shot. Equally the Orientation setting will influence the Live View display in the same way. Previously Live View was locked to landscape; not especially useful if you are working in portrait!
Meta Data and All Other categories have also been expanded to give more options on copying data from shot to shot, for example Copyright can be added and carried to the next images easily.
For skin tone correction the Color Editor has always been the goto tool for optimising color in an image. The Skin Tone tab has an additional category, Uniformity which has also been improved in 9.1.
Previously the Skin Tone tab only contained one Uniformity slider that can be used to equalise the Hue on a skin tone. Now, it has been divided into three sliders for Hue, Saturation and Lightness.
Simply put, uneven Skin Tones can be quickly and easily ‘equalised’ without the need to progress to Photoshop for this task. It can be a huge time saver.
To expedite workflow in all areas a number of important keyboard Shortcuts have been added and new shortcuts in the application itself. Additionally, the Keyboard Shortcut editor itself has had some small changes too to make assigning shortcuts easier.
New Keyboard Shortcuts now include options for resetting Counters. i.e Next Capture counters and renaming counters.
Select By… shortcuts enable a fast way to select all images in a collection via a Color Tag or Rating.
NB – Counter and Select By shortcuts do not have a keyboard shortcut by default. It’s up to you to assign one.
Local Adjustments also have some handy shortcuts for Inverting, Filling and cycling through layers. To assign these particular shortcuts, find them in the Other section of the Keyboard Shortcut Editor.
Right clicking on an image brings up a couple of equally useful shortcuts; Select By Same and Create Albums From…
Select By Same simple selects additional images of a matching property like a Rating.
Create Albums From.. expedites the process of creating albums also based on a property like a Color Tag or Rating. For example, you could select a whole collection of images with varying properties and corresponding albums of those properties will be created.
Finally, if you are managing your assets in Capture One, TIFF files with Alpha channels and Layers are now properly displayed in the Viewer. Particularly useful if you are round tripping to Photoshop.
