1. Classy Movies
Watch classy movies. It gives you more room for your imagination to grow. Perfect composition, unusual angles, placement of people in the shot, styling decisions, and the characters’ conflicts shown in the movie – everything is vital for your development as a photographer. Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Ozon, Woody Allen – too many great directors to be listed. I prefer to watch my “educational movies” on my laptop to make screenshots of what I want to think about later.
Visit museums to see the paintings of artists throughout history. The main inspiration here will definitely be color. They used to work with color so wisely to create a perfect color palette. Dutch Golden Age or French Impressionists – everything is so inspirational that you can develop a whole editorial based only on color ideas.
3. Ancient cultures and national costumes
Personally, I see the ancient cultures and national costumes as an endless source of inspiration for the couture-like editorials. My first exhibition was devoted to the headpieces that I made of ancient Ukrainian headbands. There is great potential for inspiration looking at the fashions of the past! There are so many ideas out there, from using headpieces, jewelry, make-up, and fabrics. Even tribal dances can be inspiring for photographers. Watch documentaries Samsara and Baraka by Ron Fricke and of course watch again the legendary Ashes And Snow by Gregory Colbert to remind to you how beautiful and fashion inspiring the world can be.
4. Music and music culture is a must
Music is a very powerful form of art. Music evokes emotions and memories that can inspire your new creations. Photographers should be familiar with the looks of different legendary musicians and music scenes. Some of these personalities were fashion innovators and made a huge impact not only in the music itself but changed the whole perspective on fashion and style. Many will remain inspiring for years to come.
5. Research fashion and make-up trends
The collections we see on the podiums and in stores are more than just the clothing. The current mood of the season can be read in each piece. It is sometimes hard to believe that every big event that occurs in the contemporary world will eventually be transformed into the trends shown on the runway. This is the great miracle of fashion. Pay more attention to it, and read editor’s reviews from time to time. There are so many inspirational clues for you to find.
6. Alternative sources
Of course, there is always something that will be inspiring just for you. High Tech architecture, flowers, Anime movies, pop culture, for example. I find contemporary dolls very inspiring, like the ones the Popovy Sisters are making. If you want to shoot high-level editorials that are telling deep stories, you need to have a vast knowledge of culture. If you keep educating yourself as a fashion artist soon you will be able to find beauty in very simple things. All the knowledge you gain will become an endless source of inspiration.
