The Mola Rayo is a 16 inch reflector that when you just look at it you assume you’re going to get a harsh, direct light. But I have to tell you, the exact opposite happens when you use the Rayo. It produces a beautiful and direct soft but contrasty light. You can use grids and diffusion on it, but I like it without. I always did love a silver lined dish. The Profoto beauty dish that’s silver lined is beautiful but it’s too harsh when you shoot color. It’s too “edgy” for even my taste. But not Mola’s Rayo reflector. You know me, I hate talking tech specs but you can read about all that here.
The other reflector I tried out was the Mola Setti which is a 28 inch reflector. Similar to the size of the beauty dish it’s got a more narrow dish which produces contrast. And I love contrast. This is a beautiful reflector and one I’ll use from now on for lighting the face on my shoots. I might diffuse this reflector but it’s good on it’s own. Read about it here.
Can’t rave enough about how great both the Mola Rayo and Setti are. Clean, crisp, forgiving, contrast with beautiful direction, what more could you ask for in a modifier? Try them out, you’ll love them. I’ll be working with them on my upcoming workshops in NYC and Sydney, Australia to show you some complicated lighting set ups. Mola can definitely live up to that challenge.
