One of the top questions I get asked the most is, “How do I shoot an editorial? How do I create a story? How do I get published?” Last May, I held a very exclusive, 3-day workshop that turned out to be very successful. The end result was that each of the participants ended on Day 3 shooting an editorial for either Breed Magazine or Alice Magazine. The workshop went so well, we’ve decided to put one together for you again. This time, a little bit different, but with the same end result: Days 1 & 2 will be me teaching you everything that goes into a High Fashion Magazine shoot. Day 3 will be you shooting your own Editorial for Breed Magazine. Your editorial will be published in an upcoming issue of Breed Magazine and you will leave understanding fully how to plan, build a team, shoot an editorial, work through the selection process, retouch our images and get the story published.
The 3 day workshop will be held September 22nd, 23rd and 24th and it takes place in New York City. Here’s the schedule:
Day 1— Friday, September 22nd:
Meet for a light breakfast at 9AM and look at everyone’s portfolio. I’ll do a review of your portfolio, a career assessment and give you some advice on what you should be focusing on at the stage you’re at in your career. Then we will walk through what an editorial assignment looks like. I’ll show you mood boards from previous magazine assignments I have had, how I went about executing the assignment, what tasks I was given by my fashion editors and how I solved each part of pre-production until the shoot day. We’ll go through all the aspects of what it takes to shoot an editorial:
- Location Scouting
- Determining the right lighting
- Envisioning the shot list and sequence based on weather, looks, timing, etc.
*Note: If you are joining us for Day 3, we will look at your mood board and create a list of all the things you wish to accomplish the day of the shoot and set out to take care of all of it. This is an advanced class that moves quickly. Photographers must be approved prior to attending Day 3 of the class. We recommend that you attend a Breed class or classes prior to this one or have experience.
Day 2— Saturday, September 23rd:
Meet at the studio in NYC at 9 AM and watch how an editorial is shot from understanding our work in pre-production from the previous day to now we are on set! What happens next! On this day my team will give a lecture on what their job is exactly on this shoot, how they prepared, what they anticipate. You can ask as many questions as you want. Even the model will speak about how she prepares for the mood of the shoot and you will be able to watch me give her direction and guiding her while she’s posing. This is a great way to truly understand what goes in to creating a strong story aka: Editorial! I will then shoot an 8 page editorial with my team. I will have my fashion editor on hand so you can see the interaction between client and photographer. It will be a very motivating and highly educational 2 days! And if you’re ready to shoot your own editorial then you can come back for Day 3…..Shooting your OWN Editorial for Breed Magazine!
Day 3— Sunday, September 24th:
Call Time is 9 AM. You will arrive at the studio and your team and model will be there all ready to get started on your own editorial. I will act as editor ( because I am the editor ) and while the model is getting ready we will go through your mood board again, making sure you have everything set. You will be given an assistant and your lighting will already be pre-determined from our discussion on Friday. All you have to do now is Shoot Your Editorial!
Again, the class on day 1 & 2 is open to everyone. It will be a very educational, fast moving class designed for experienced photographers who want to get their work published. We’ll teach you what you need to know to shoot a High Fashion Magazine editorial shoot from start to finish. You must apply & be accepted to Day 3. If you can only join us for the first 2 days, don’t worry! It’ll will be an amazing opportunity for you to learn how to shoot your own high fashion editorials.
